Over the years, I've read many books and seen many movies and YouTube videos that talk about building belief in oneself.
In my experience, belief is created from a few sources.
1. Self Confidence
Self-confidence is one of the most interesting dynamics that we have to be constantly aware of.
For some, it comes and goes. For others, it's nonexistent. For me, self-confidence is created from doing things I love doing. I focus on my priorities and being able to do the things I want to do, and with whom I want to.
Make a list (or bucket list) of things you always wanted to do, and work on making them a reality.
2. Courage
Courage is also essential to building belief. Courage builds self-confidence too. Courage is required to live in this world. How does one develop courage? To feel fear and act anyway. Some people think that fear is something that can be eliminated. Truth is, fear will never completely go away.
Whenever I thought about doing something scary and acted on it, it always turned out well. Perhaps because my gut has never let me down, or that the universe was guiding me in some way.
Do scary stuff to build confidence and belief.
3. Risk
While courage is important, we also need to calculate and way our options. This helps ensure our survival and protect what we have built in the past. We may not get it right every time, but as long as we are taking a healthy amount of risk, and being rewarded more often than not, then we win.
"No risk, no reward" as the saying goes. Check your ego at the door and then act.
4. Health
In my experience, every time I have worked on my eating and exercise routine to be more healthy and fit, I've built confidence.
Over the last 9 months, I lost 16 kgs through a controlled diet. Then, over a month ago, I started working out at the gym almost daily.
When we are eating healthy and our body is strong, the mind has the best operating environment to help us get our tasks done, act despite fear, and evaluate opportunities.
"Strong body strong mind", is my current strength affirmation.
This may not be a complete list of ways to build belief in oneself, but it is in these personal actions that we can start to re-create our lives.
Notice that none of these things are caused by someone or something in our life. External validation is great, but it will not help you build a sustainable future for yourself or your family.
Belief is not something we need to wait for either. It can be had in a short space of time and be turned on instantly given the right circumstances and practice.
