Start simple. Your cover letter is essentially a letter, so begin with a brief greeting.
Example:
"Hi [Client's Name],"
Immediately acknowledge the job post. This demonstrates that you’ve read it and appreciate the opportunity.
Example:
"Thank you for posting this position on Upwork. I’m happy to respond and help with this project in any way I can."
Highlight specific skills or experiences that make you a good fit for the job. Use examples and reference any similar work you’ve done.
Example:
"I noticed you're looking for a graphic designer experienced with Canva. I’ve been using Canva for over nine years to create thumbnails for YouTube channels. Here’s a [link to my portfolio/Google Drive folder] with samples of my work."
Clearly outline your relevant experience. Be honest if there are areas where you’re less experienced, but open to learning.
Example:
"I’ve been a graphic designer for over ten years, and my portfolio includes projects similar to what you’re looking for. However, video editing is something I'm currently learning, and I’m committed to mastering it to meet your needs."
Towards the end of your letter, ask questions to prompt a response and further discussions.
Example:
"When are you available for an interview? I’m available next Tuesday or Wednesday. Also, when are you looking to start this project? Understanding your timeline helps me plan my work schedule."
Conclude with an expression of anticipation and gratitude.
Example:
"I look forward to hearing back from you soon. Thank you for considering my application."
End your letter with a polite sign-off and your name.
Example:
"Best regards, [Your Name]"
People don’t have much time, especially if they’re reviewing multiple applications. Short sentences and clear paragraphs make your cover letter more readable.
A well-formatted cover letter with spaces between paragraphs improves readability.
Small touches like addressing the client by name can make a big difference.
Asking a question towards the end can prompt a response, moving your application forward in the process.
